Deerfield Academy and Northfield Mount Hermon BBBS Programs

This is the question you will be asked by your child when he or she is matched with a Northfield Mount Hermon or Deerfield Academy Big Brother or Big Sister.
Northfield Mount Hermon School (NMH) and Deerfield Academy (DA) are two internationally recognized private college preparatory schools. Both schools have beautiful campuses and facilities and attract highly motivated students from across the United States and around the world. BBBSFC has partnered with these two schools since the 1980’s to provide quality mentoring programs on their campuses.
Children between the ages of 6 and 10 are matched one-to-one with students at one of the schools. The child and his or her mentor meet on Friday evenings from 6:00 until 8:15 during the school year. Children stay matched with the same “Big„ for a year and a half, until the Big graduates. Friday evenings start with dinner in the school’s dining hall, followed by a wide variety of activities on campus for Bigs and Littles to choose from. The activities include swimming, scavenger hunts, arts & crafts, sports (basketball, wiffle ball, kickball…), and Bingo! Bigs and Littles can also watch athletic events on campus, such as basketball or hockey games, or they can attend concerts, dance performances and other events happening at the school on Friday evenings.
Staff from Big Brothers Big Sisters are on duty at the schools during every match meeting. The mentors at NMH and DA volunteer to be a part of this program, and each one completes a thorough assessment process prior to being matched. Both Bigs and Littles benefit from the friendships they make and the fun times that they have together!
Children are matched depending on where they live, so children from central, south, and western Franklin County are generally matched at DA, while children from northern and eastern Franklin County are generally matched at the NMH program. The schools provide limited transportation to students from Greenfield, Turners Falls, Athol, and Orange.
